Description

The unique styling of Elizabethan and Renaissance heeled shoes is brought to life with our Mary. A tie closure, open sides, and a low, practical heel makes these late Renaissance era shoes perfect for both indoor and outdoor fairs and events.

Mary is accurate for c. 1580 through the 1630s. This type of shoe represented the return to heeled styles and was the pinnacle of fashion for the nobility in its early days, but soon became the shoe for everybody. You'll see very similar styles peeking from beneath the hems of petticoats in paintings and prints of this era.

This design was worn by women and men alike, and we have it available in men's sizing, called Marlowe. There is crossover between the men's and women's size ranges. Please note that women's standard width is "B" and men's standard width is "D."

Not 100% accurate, but accurate enough and a beautiful shoe

The major inaccuracy is that there are a left and a right shoe. That wasn't how shoes were generally made in the 16th/17th century. Other than that, shoes weren't machine-sewn in that period, and there are doubtless more inaccuracies that a true shoe historian would notice. That said, they look appropriate to the period, and they fit nicely, true to size. They are also beautifully made, leather and leather-lined with a leather sole.

With the addition of a rubber sole, they would be perfect for most outdoor renaissance faire and reenactment uses.

I'd wanted to buy the previous generation of these shoes, but I didn't get around to it. This time, I pounced as soon as I saw them.
